The Kingdom Of Love
“All I wanted was for him to love me.” said Margo. The search for love brought hundreds to the shelter for battered women every year. “I thought his jealousy was love. How could he hurt me so bad and say he loved me? I don’t know what love is. It is not anything I have ever known.”
Women who had lost everything and fled their abusers in terror said, “I wanted someone to love me.” They were seeking the kingdom of love, but found abuse, rejection, control and pain. “I will do anything for love. I will endure any pain, heartache, or abuse to be loved,” said a 43 year old battered wife.
I knew their pain. I had lived it. I had been despised and rejected. I knew what it was to endure almost any kind of abuse to be loved by just one person. I knew the loneliness of being totally rejected. I knew pain and shame.
I discovered in dating there are men who will say anything to get a woman he is sexually attracted to go to bed with him. ” I love you. I am committed to you. I want to marry you.” But the painful reality after compromising my values was, “Sex is not love.” A man can make love to your body while hating your soul. The world offers a love that can deceive, deplete and destroy you.
