Hypocrites in Church,
A friend recently told me the reason she does not go to
church, “I have trouble going to church because of all the
hypocrites in church.”
“I know what you mean,” I said. “The church is full of
hypocrites, but I love them all. The worst part of it it, I am a
hypocrite myself. My standards are so high, that no matter how hard I try to keep them, I fail.”
A hypocrite is someone who has high standard, but doesn’t live up to them. It is a person who acts in
contradiction to his or her stated belief. The rightness of Christ is our standard. Perfect holiness is
the standard of a Christian, but none of us has attained it. And if anyone says they are perfect, they either
do not understand what perfect is or they are lying to themselves and others.
I remember sitting in Sunday School as a new Christian. The class discussion was about staying away
from even the appearance of evil. They said to never drink beer or go into a bar or liquor store. The next
Friday night I was at the Fun House Pizza in Kansas City where they were dancing, singing and drinking. I
asked the country western singer to sing the Old Rugged Cross since it was Good Friday. As he sang
everyone got quiet as they listened to the words telling of the sacrifice of Jesus. I took off the wooden cross necklace that hung around my neck and I gave to the singer as I saw a tear fall from his eye.
My beloved friends, it is Christ who is perfect. It is his holiness that we cling to. He was accused of
being a hypocrite. The religious leader of that day accused him of being a drunkard and glutton.
I just came back.from a church potluck . There were gluttons everywhere. We all overate.
The only righteousness any of us have is the righteousness of Christ within us. Even the Apostle
Paul said, “I want to be good. but I can’t. Thank God it is done through the power of the Holy
Find a church that is close to you. They won’t be perfect, but you
might find a friend and a prayer partner.
Roman’s 3:10 “No one is righteous not even one.”
May we all be a reflection
of our Lord Jesus Christ.
When we fail may we
forgive ourselves and when
others fail, we must forgive
them even more quickly.
